Who We Are

We are a reformed, Presbyterian Church that serves the communities of Alness and Invergordon in Easter Ross.  We love Jesus, the Bible and people – and we would love to welcome you too.

Our Church building is located on the main A9 road heading north from Inverness, between the towns of Alness and Invergordon.  We seek to serve both communities as we witness together to Jesus.

On any given Sunday we would see 70-80 people (of all ages) to worship God together.  We have a Sunday School and Creche facility and there is always a children’s talk during the service.  We believe Church is for all our Church family and there should be something for everyone.  Whoever you are, whatever age and stage, you are welcome.

What We Believe

What we believe centres around Jesus.  We believe He is God’s Son who has come into the World to redeem it – to fix all that is broken.  Through his life, his atoning death on a Cross, and rising from the dead 3 days later Jesus has opened the way back to God, made the forgiveness of sin possible and will one day return and rid the World of death, sin, sadness and all that is imperfect and broken.  In short, Jesus is the King and he is establishing his Kingdom on the Earth.

We are called to faith in Jesus.  And he turns noone who comes to him away.

If you are looking for more detail on what we believe, I would recommend you start by listening to our services or just get in touch and ask us any questions you may have (we would be delighted to hear from you).

As a Church all our Ministers and Elders have to subscribe to a document called ‘the Westminster Confession of Faith’ (freely available online) as an accurate summary of what we believe the Bible to teach.  It doesn’t cover everything but it is a decent summary of what we believe on a number of things.

If you don’t have time to go through that in detail let us give you a couple of sentences on some of the central issues.

The Bible – we believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant word of God.  In the Bible we have God revealing himself to us and his amazing way of salvation in Jesus.

God – we believe in one God who has existed in 3 persons eternally – The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  3 persons, 1 God.

Jesus – we believe Jesus is fully God and fully Man.  He is God the Son become Man to rescue and to save the World.  He is the Promised King and Saviour that God had promised all the way through the Old Testament.

Sin – we believe that sin is what brought death and brokenness into the World and that it affects all of us.  Sin is more than just ‘bad things we do’, but, at its heart, is our rejection of God.  We believe Jesus came to deal with sin and save sinners.

Salvation – we believe that we are saved by faith alone in Jesus alone.  By his living a perfect life, dying on the Cross for our sin, in our place, and by rising from the dead on the third day we believe Jesus is the only way to have sin forgiven, come back to God and have eternal life.

Resurrection – we believe that Jesus really died but really, bodily, historically rose from the dead.

Our History

Rosskeen Free Church formed out of what is known as ‘the Disruption’ of 1843 when, in a dispute over patronage (wealthy individuals having undue influence in the Church including matters like the appointment of Ministers) ministers, elders and lay people left the Church of Scotland en masse to form the Church of Scotland, Free.  The roots of the congregation go back all the way to the 16th Century.

The Church has worshipped in its current location since 1900 and we hope to carry on for a few more yet!
